i woke up this morning and looked out the window. on the top of the neighboring building, i spied what appears to be a peregrine falcon preening and preparing to eat a dead pigeon. it wasn't a pretty sight, but i reminded myself that it is perfectly natural, and i did spend a couple of minutes finding out http://www.illinoisraptorcenter.org/Field%20Guide/urbancliffs.html what kind of bird of prey it is.
in looking into peregrine falcons, i almost completely forgot i was meeting my friend jan for coffee at peet's at 9. i ran like a mad woman only to find my car blocked in by a truck full of really cool looking industrial pipes being unloaded by four of the friendliest men in chicago. they proceeded to help me maneuver around their truck (i managed not to hyperventilate in extricating my car out of a supertight parking spot in front of multiple witnesses!).
off to peet's and breath-of-fresh-air jan. she is a retired teacher who works in non-profit now and makes serious time commitments to both yoga and pilates. she is also addicted to moleskine cahiers (the little ones), she's filling her 4th today, and she's like the johnny appleseed of moleskines. she has super positive energy and is really frank and hilarious. i love spending time with her.
jan had to get some fixin's from whole foods and i went in with her. i know it's more pricey to go there, and somewhere along the line somebody told me the place was "whole paycheck," but i guess now that i'm 34, i believe that what i eat is important enough to spend some money on. i munched on some damn tasty guacamole just a few moments ago and i also was SO HAPPY to score some rhubarb. i plan on making rhubarb sauce this afternoon. i also bought some baby portabellos and i'm going to make a garlic cream sauce with them over pasta tonight and mike will be a very happy man when he comes home to it!
i am wearing fantastic $19.99 corduroys from old navy that are mint green. wearing them with my raspberry clogs today made me very happy indeed. i also bought a dwell magazine and oohed and aahed over the many cool housing design ideas. design has increasingly become more interesting to me--specifically house design. considering i'm not even in the market or capable of purchasing a dwelling, this seems at odds. but who knows...in the mean time i'm collecting ideas and staying inspired design-wise.
i'm off to do a marathon of writing thank you notes now. blergh.
